Transport for Railway Industry & Rail Technology

For the rail industry, maintenance depots and transit operators, Logisticoo transports what keeps rail vehicles running: wheelsets, bogies, gearboxes, converters, door modules and complete component sets for overhauls. Rail technology is heavy, expensive and often bulky — a wheelset weighs a good tonne, a bogie several; accordingly, we run with reinforced lashing systems, the manufacturer’s specialist frames and, where necessary, crane unloading straight off the vehicle. When a trainset is stuck in the depot for want of a missing spare part, every hour of downtime counts double: then we run an express direct trip from the manufacturer’s warehouse straight to the maintenance depot, at night too, with a fixed-price commitment within 30 minutes. Plannable series deliveries to production sites, by contrast, we schedule as fixed services with agreed time windows at the works gate and crane. Combining with our air freight and sea freight services is also possible when components arrive from overseas and need onward carriage from the airport or port. Your personal dispatcher coordinates loading dates with the works and the consignee — you have one point of contact instead of three interfaces. We also bring trade-fair exhibits and training components for rail technology to their place of use on time and well secured.

Vehicles & equipment

Depending on the component, we schedule curtainsider semitrailers with reinforced floors and heavy-duty lashing points, vehicles with a loader crane for receiving points without lifting gear, and low-loaders for tall or particularly heavy components.

Typical requirements

  • Transport of heavy components such as wheelsets, bogies and converters
  • Express direct runs on vehicle failure and trains stranded in the depot
  • Handling of manufacturer-specific transport frames and load carriers
  • Crane unloading and coordination of loading dates with the works and maintenance
  • Scheduled series supply to production and overhaul sites
  • Pre- and onward carriage to air and sea freight for overseas components

Typical consignments from the railway industry

For rail vehicle manufacturers, maintenance depots and transit operators we mainly carry heavy drive and running-gear components: wheelsets (around 1–1.5 t), complete bogies (several tonnes), gearboxes, traction motors and converters. Added to these are body components — door modules, air-conditioning units, seats, interior fittings, driver’s desks — and complete spare-part sets for scheduled overhauls. A category of its own is bulky or long parts such as carbody segments, pantographs and rail material. Much of it travels on manufacturer-specific transport frames. Consignees are production sites, repair and maintenance depots and rolling stock depots. The range runs from plannable series deliveries to the works to the emergency single consignment when a trainset is stuck in the depot for a missing part.

Rules and securing in rail-technology transport

Rail technology is heavy, expensive and critical in its centre of gravity — load securing is therefore carried out consistently to VDI 2700 ff. and EN 12195 with heavy-duty lashing points, chains and defined bearing points. We preferably transport wheelsets and bogies on the manufacturer’s original frames, which guarantee a positive-fit mounting and roll protection; where these are missing, we build a safe alternative from squared timber, chocks and heavy-duty lashing. When standard dimensions are exceeded, abnormal and heavy transport with a permit under Section 29/Section 46 of the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) applies. Sensitive assemblies such as converters and electronics travel with low vibration and dry. Where components contain hazardous materials — for example traction batteries or hydraulic oils — we handle the ADR-relevant part in compliance with the regulations.

How a rail-technology transport works at Logisticoo

  1. Enquiry with component, weight, dimensions, available transport frame and destination (works or maintenance).
  2. Fixed price in 30 minutes with the matching vehicle and securing class.
  3. For stranded trains, the express direct run from the manufacturer’s warehouse often starts within a few hours, on long distances with two drivers alternating.
  4. Loading by crane or loader crane, positive-fit securing on the frame or bearing points.
  5. Transport with status updates; for overseas components, pre- or onward carriage to our air and sea freight services.
  6. Crane unloading at the works or maintenance depot at the agreed time, return of the empty frames. Your dispatcher coordinates the loading dates with the works and the consignee — one point of contact instead of three interfaces.

What does a rail-technology transport cost?

The fixed price is set in advance. Rules of thumb per kilometre (±15%): Sprinter for smaller assemblies around €1.10/km (from €89), 7.5 t truck around €1.45/km (from €169), 12 t truck around €1.65/km (from €219), articulated truck/heavy transport around €1.95/km (from €379). Example: a bogie as a direct run on the articulated truck from Kassel to Nuremberg (around 330 km) comes to roughly €640–740. Surcharges arise for a two-driver crew on the non-stop run, crane unloading, heavy-transport permits and a night start on depot emergencies. Plannable series services to the works with return of the empty frames cut the per-kilometre price compared with the one-off trip.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can we get a spare part to the maintenance depot when a train is stranded?

After your enquiry the fixed price is set in 30 minutes, and collection usually follows within a few hours depending on location. On long distances two drivers drive through in shifts, so the part arrives without a rest-break interruption. Your dispatcher coordinates the arrival with the workshop shift so that it can be fitted straight away.

Can you transport bogies if we have no transport frames of our own?

Transport is ideally carried out on the manufacturer’s original frames, which we take over at the shipper’s and return after use. If no frames are available, we agree a safe alternative with you from squared timber, chocks and heavy-duty lashing — what matters are defined bearing points, so that neither the component nor the vehicle floor is damaged.

Can we get a spare part to the works at short notice when a series delivery is to be planned?

Yes, plannable series deliveries to production and overhaul sites we schedule as fixed services with agreed time windows at the works gate and crane. Your dispatcher records the terms, coordinates the loading dates with both sides and returns the empty frames after use. That way you can reliably factor the delivery into your maintenance or production cycle.

Do you combine road transport with air or sea freight for overseas components?

Yes. When components arrive from overseas at the airport or port, we organise the pre- and onward carriage to our air and sea freight services and ensure the continuous chain right through to the maintenance depot. You have one point of contact for the entire route instead of separate interfaces for sea, air and road.

Do you also transport trade-fair exhibits and training components for rail technology?

Yes. Exhibition pieces such as cutaway models, driver’s desks or components for training purposes we bring to their place of use on time and well secured. Such exhibits are often high-value and delicate, so we run them with low vibration and documented handover, as a direct run without transhipment on request.
